N'western, Tamaqua pick up double wins
Northwestern picked up field hockey and golf wins, while Tamaqua hit the win column in girls soccer and tennis on Monday in scholastic sports action.
BOYS SOCCERLehighton-Pleasant Vy.The Bears picked up another win over Lehighton with a 4-0 shutout.Leading 1-0 at halftime, Pleasant Valley erupted in the second half for three more scores to pull away.Haris Sobobic tallied the initial score, as he was assisted by Jack Wathen in the first half. In the second half, Jordan Walters fed Blake Evans for the score, and was followed by the teaming up of Mike Masullo's assist to Troy Schauder. Rounding out the scoring was Joell Toledo, assisted by Aaron Guerra.The Bears (3-5-1), outshot the Indians 18-0 in the game and had 11 penalty corners to Lehighton's one.The Indians' Shane Fordyce was busy in goal, as he recorded 13 saves.Northwestern-Saucon Vy.The Tigers (3-4-1, 1-2-1) and Panthers battled and battled, before ending in a scoreless tie after two halves of regulation and two overtime sessions.Saucon (5-0-2, 3-0-2), outshot Northwestern 19-5 in the game.Northwestern's Talon Williams stopped 19 shots on goal for a shutout, while Nate Robinson of Saucon stopped five to preserve the tie.GIRLS SOCCERNo. Schuylkill-Jim ThorpeJim Thorpe handled North Schuylkill 8-1 in a Schuylkill League match-up. The Lady Olympians jumped all over the Lady Spartans right out of the gates scoring four goals in the first half. Chelsea Smelas got the Olympian rout going scoring one of her two goals at the 31.42 mark. Monica Eckley, Kristen Lawrence, and Kat Condly also scored two goals a piece.The Spartans held a 24-21 edge in shots on goal, but Smith had 232 saves for Jim Thorpe.Tamaqua-Nativity BVMThe Lady Raiders remain perfect on the season at 8-0 overall, and 5-0 in the league after they downed Nativity, 3-2.Trailing 2-1 at halftime, the victors got the job done in the second, as Kailee Rottet recorded the second and third goals of her hat trick on the day. The winning goal came with a little over nine minutes remaining in the contest.Tamaqua outshot their opponent, 17-7 in the game, and Chey Bates stopped two shots on goal for another win.Keegan White and Bridget Holohan scored Nativity's goals, and Maria Carillo assisted on one of them.FIELD HOCKEYNo. Lehigh-PalisadesAfter two halves and an overtime period, Northern Lehigh and Palisades ended in a 1-1 tie.The Bulldogs got a first half goal from Kiana Bellesfield off a feed from Jessie Olewine, only to see Palisades' Meryah Harding tie it up in the second, unassisted.Nicole Horn had 18 saves for the Bulldogs (4-3-1). Samantha Partington also had two goals and an assist for the Tigers (5-1-1), with Lauren Horner and Alex Lerner tallying the other single scores.
