Mudslides blamed on township work

A Washington Township couple hopes the third mudslide to have occurred in their back yard will be the last.

Marcia Richards said she and her husband, Jack, returned home from vacation July 22. Since then, they have experienced a trio of mudslides. The couple, who has resided at their home at 7226 Whispering Lane for over 20 years, said they believe work the township performed is at the root of the problem."There are mudslides in the back of our house we believe was caused by work that was done by the township," Marcia Richards said. "Those ditches just appeared sometime this summer; we noticed it after the second mudslide."Marcia said the couple's efforts to address the problem with the township were unsuccessful."My husband has been in touch with the township, but gotten nowhere," she said. "We've had heavy rain before, but I've never had mud in my pool."That prompted the couple to contact township zoning officer/code enforcement officer Justin Yaich.Yaich said there is a drain pipe at the top of the property that's been there for over 30 years. He said a drain ditch ran through a pretty heavily-graded area, and the end of the pipe had become blocked with silt, which caused flooding at a neighboring property. As a result, Yaich said township workers came out to the property to attempt to correct the problem. Soon afterward, about six inches of rain fell, which caused even more problems, he said."It was severe; they had a legitimate concern," Yaich said. "The pressure of the water blew the retention pond."Yaich said the township has since gone back over to the property to make sure the water stayed as it has in the past."Hopefully, now, the problem is resolved," he said. "Nobody should be left as they were."In the meantime, Yaich said the township will continue to monitor the situation.
