Resident urges S. Hill council to enact ban against fracking

A Summit Hill resident has asked the borough council to adopt an ordinance banning fracking, a practice utilized in natural gas drilling.

Sheree Parsons said she works for the Environmental Legal Defense Fund"Wherever fracking is done, there is potential for groundwater contamination. Property values decrease," she said.She said the borough is downstream from the marcellus shale drilling."This is serious stuff," said Parsons.Council President Joe Weber said the basis for such an ordinance would be to protect the borough's water supply.Weber said the borough's solicitor will be asked to review the matter and then council will consider action.Franklin Klock, of North Walnut Street, said he supports the proposal by Parsons."We all do live downstream," he said, adding that water is connected underground for hundreds of miles.In other matters:• Jim Dotson of the Carbon County Juvenile Probation Office said the state has cut the "Little Brigade Project." He told the council that he has available a group of youngsters who will be available to clean up parks and do other types of work.• St. Joseph's Catholic Church was given permission to hold its annual picnic on July 15-17. The annual Two Saints Scamper will be held July 9.The procession of St. Gabriel will be staged at 3 p.m. on July 17.• The council will allow fire police from the borough to assist with the Pa. State Fireman's Convention Parade in Kidder Township on Sept. 24. It will be up to the individual fire policeto decide if they want to help.• By a vote of 4-1, the council approved four more garbage fee exemptions. Council Michael Kokinda opposed.
