Having a bad week?
For some unfortunate people, this week isn't ending soon enough.
It was an especially bad time for the rich and the famous and their sexual indiscretions.First, we learned that Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the leader of the International Monetary Fund, was accused of attempted rape by a maid in a penthouse suite at a New York Hotel last weekend. A week ago, the high-flying 62-year-old banker and diplomat had aspirations of becoming the next president of France. Then, he found himself behind bars in a Rikers Island jail, awaiting trial on the sexual abuse charges, his career in flames. Even if he posts the $1 million cash bail, plus an additional $5 million bond to get out of prison, he'll still be confined to a New York apartment, under armed guard and electronic monitoring.Another world-famous personality whose long career is in shambles after confession to a secret sexual escapade is former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The nation was stunned to learn that he had fathered a son with a woman on his household staff more than a decade ago. Somehow, he managed to keep the incredible secret from the public and his wife, prominent former TV journalist and Kennedy heiress Maria Shriver.Along with those two blockbusters was a report that the hideout of Osama bin Laden contained quite a collection of pornography. Although it's unclear who the material actually belonged to, it opened a flood of ridicule against the man who was so lionized by his terrorist minions while he was alive. When the U.S. commandos raided his compound on May 2, there were nine women and 23 children on the grounds, including three of his wives. While Osama bin Laden is no longer alive, the painful days of public humiliation may have just started for Strauss-Kahn and Schwarzenegger.Or are they almost over?Harold Camping, an 89-year-old California minister, is predicting a world-ending earthquake for Saturday. He said New Zealand will first feel the tremor at 6 p.m. (2 a.m. EDT), which will trigger the apocalypse.Camping says that as it continues across the Earth, every Richter scale in the world and every news organization in the world will have no doubt that "Judgment Day is here."Writers sometimes close a column by saying "stay tuned ..."But for the Camping followers, there wouldn't be enough time ... for anyone to do anything anywhere.
