The treasurer of the Eldred Township Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization has been charged with stealing from the group.

Karen Steever, 44, of Kunkletown, is accused of taking $3,842.She was arrested by state police at Lehighton barracks and charged with theft by deception and misapplication of entrusted property.State police say the thefts occurred over a two year period from approximately January 2008 to December 2009.During that time, Steever wrote and endorsed checks for cash from the checking account of the treasury, police said.Steever then allegedly cashed the checks and returned no receipts or documentation of what the money had been used for.A total of 26 checks were written with the grand total being $3,842.
