Ashtown Road resident Colin Rehrig reported to Mahoning Township supervisors at Wednesday evening's meeting truck traffic along his road in the vicinity of the stone bridge has been increasing in volume and in types. During the public comment portion of the meeting, he told supervisors that garbage trucks now seem to be using the road regularly.

"I see Tamaqua trucks on that road going well in excess of 20 miles per hour now," said Rehrig. At previous meetings he has reported seeing tractor trailers and delivery trucks making regular use of the road, driving in excess speeds and hauling large trailers.He has asked the board what remedies can be done to protect the Gypsy Hill Bridge that connects Ashtown Road to Lehighton. At the previous meeting he asked supervisors what could be done to stop this traffic from using the road. "Could we reduce the weight limit on the bridge?"Supervisor George Stawnyczyj said a traffic study would need to be conducted most likely to determine if the weight limit could be decreased on the bridge. Also since the bridge is partially in Lehighton and partially in Mahoning Township, there might be some need to talk with Lehighton about what can be done to solve the problem.Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt at the time also pointed out the bridge must be inspected every two years and there have been no recommendations to date to reduce the speed limit.At last night's meeting supervisors had no new information to share with Rehrig but listened to his update. "I don't know what day they are picking up Lehighton's garbage but they are going in excess of 40 miles per hour sometimes."Supervisors had discussed getting a cost estimate to perform a road study on the road by Carbon Engineering to determine if the pavement can support the weight of these trucks. The motion carried unanimously, but as of last night supervisors had no update on the cost.
