A former North Carolina resident, with an extensive criminal record, was sentenced to a state prison term on Monday in Carbon County court for criminal trespass and an assault on a fellow inmate at the county prison.

Patrick Adam Huey, 36, formerly of Spruce Pine, N.C., was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic to serve a total of 40 to 80 months in a state correctional institution.Huey was charged with the Aug. 7, 2005, burglary of a summer home in Penn Forest Twonshp and owned by Kimberlee Lopoglie, of Norristown. While an inmate at the county prison in Nesquehoning he was charged with the assault on Leonard Cerami, a fellow prisoner at the jail, on May 26, 2008.Nanovic noted that Huey had one of the most extensive criminal records to come before him dating back over 15 years. In a plea bargain, the burglary charge was dropped and Huey pleaded to criminal trespass.Huey told Nanovic he has been "living on the road" since he was in his teens. He said he was mostly going to music festivals along the east coast all that time and living wherever he could find a place to stay.He broke into the Penn Forest home and lived therer for a time. He did extensive damages to the interior of the home. Huey told Nanovic when he first broke into the house he did not damage it. He said due to drug and alcohol use he admitted causing the damages that totaled over $7,000.Defense Atty. Mark Combi said his client also has mental health issues. He added that Huey's drug addiction was extensive.Combi said while Huey is on his medication for his mental health issues he is not a bad person and has caused no problems in the jail. Huey is currently in a state facility being transferred there after the assault incident.Nanovic said he was concerned about the assault incident. Nesquehoning police, who investigated, reported that Huey stabbed the victim in the face and attempted to stab him in the throat using a pen. He also said the report quoted Huey as saying he wanted to kill Cerami.Huey said that the assault was due in part to his mental health problems but since the incident he has been treated regularly and gets counseling while in prison.Nanovic sentenced Huey to serve 24 to 60 months on the charge of criminal trespass and 40 to 80 months on the assault count. The terms run concurrent. Huey was given credit for 650 days spent in prison to date on the trespass charge but no credit for the assault count.He was also ordered to pay restitution to $1,935.83 to Lopoglie and $6,697.22 to her insurance carrier. Other conditions include zero tolerance of drug or alcohol use, continue mental health treatment, no contact with the victims in both cases, supply a DNA blood sample and pay to $250 fee, and when paroled maintain fulltime employment.
