Lighting of gravesSt. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, has announced plans for its annual Lighting of the Graves observance for All Souls and All Saints days. The ceremony serves to remind church members and friends of those who have passed away.On Saturday, Oct. 31, the lighting of the luminaries at the parish's White Bear cemetery will take place after the 4 p.m. Mass.On Sunday, Nov. 1, the lighting will take place at 6 p.m. at the parish's Summit Hill cemetery.League to meetThe Summit Hill-Nesquehoning Little League will hold its monthly meeting on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. in the Summit Hill Borough Building. This meeting is for all families to attend. Election of new board members for the 2010 season, registration, and other important items will need to be addressed.SHCIO to meetThe Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization will meet on Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. in the borough hall. Debra Ranck, president, will be in charge of the session.To aid troopsLance Corporal John J. Kennedy Jr. and the 2nd Battalion/2nd Marines will be deploying to Afghanistan this fall. Parents and families of the division are planning to honor them by sending each of the 1,000 members a package during the holidays. It is their hope to bring comfort, smiles and a bit of home to them.One item they are hoping to include in each package is a hand-knitted helmet liner. The group is seeking people willing to make them. The directions are specific to fit under their helmets and supply needed warmth.They can be found on the Internet at www.the2-2family.blogspot.com or by contacting the Kennedy family, (570) 645-5709.Other items needed are: chap-stick, disposable razors, baby wipes (small portable-size packages), and Colgate Wisp disposable toothbrushes.If you are willing to knit (or know someone who would like to knit), donate items or contribute financially to purchase items and help with postage, contact the Kennedy family, 12 E. Monetary donations will also be used to purchase wool to supply local volunteers for knitting the helmet liners.The deadline for the collection is Nov. 4.LansfordCatholic SokolsThe Slovak Catholic Sokols will host a business meeting/dinner at the Lansford AMVETS Post on Sunday, Nov. 8. The day will begin with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford, followed by the meeting at noon at the post and the dinner.
