Torn up streets an issue
Frank Jacobs stood up during the visitor's segment of the Nesquehoning Council meeting Wednesday evening to ask when the torn-up streets will be repaved. He named the streets that are in deplorable condition since Bellview of Walnutport did construction on the water lines. Council president Don DeMarco said he didn't know but had a lot of phone calls on the matter and will find out.
Tom Merman again brought up the matter of the paper street lying between East Railroad and High Streets. He did more investigative work and brought copies to the meeting stating by the court house in Carbon County that Samuel and Sharon Devan purchased that street for $1. He said he is going to get to the bottom of this.The final bid was awarded to low bidder S and K of Tobyhanna of $206,500 to make the west end of the Nesquehoning Recreation Center into a police station. Out of the $200,000 grant $181,000 will be used for construction while the rest is for desks and computers. A meeting will take place on Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. on the subject. Council would like to insert a finish date for the proposal.The Sparich home on East Columbus Avenue is still owned by Sparich but M and T Bank has a bankruptcy on it and if it doesn't pay the bills, it will be torn down as a nuisance. After careful investigation, it was found that people are going into the structure through the back door and it is considered a fire and safety Hazard. Atty. Robert Yurchak will draw up a letter concerning the problem.Trick or Treat Night is tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the borough said Mayor Tony Walck. He also announced that the next Crime Watch meeting is set for Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.There will be a special meeting for the newly proposed Solar Park on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the borough office.A letter will be sent to State Rep. Keith McCall concerning changing the mile per hour speed limit on SR 54. Mayor Walck said it should be studied and changed to 40 mph since construction has begun for the storage sheds along the highway and there are more trucks traveling onto the co-generation road now. The speed limit would extend down to the Kovatch Corporation buildings.Mark Stromelo, councilman and head of the Sanitation Committee said there has been reported dumping behind the Wash Shanty and police will investigate until they find out who is doing it. Offenders will be cited for Scattering Rubbish. Tires that have been left out on the curb for weeks will be cited as well. The tires need to have a special tag on them and $2 must be paid to the borough secretary before the tires are collected by the garbage truck.Frank DiMiceli said that thanks to KME many ambulance personnel were left out of work thirteen days this month to answer calls. One day there were five calls. He said appreciation is shown to the Kovatch family for this gesture.Council met in executive session from 7:30 until 8 p.m.
