The Children of Lehigh Carbon Community College's SHINE (Schools and Homes in Education) 21st Century After-School Program will participate in the 10th annual Lights-On" after school celebration. This years' Lights-On is dedicated to the late Senator James Rhoades, a champion for after-school programs.
This national event will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 in the Panther Valley High School Auditorium, 1 Panther Way, Lansford, PA.The SHINE After-School Program provides academic support to over 225 students in grade K-4th in five school districts and four parochial schools in Carbon and Schuylkill Counties.Students will premiere a video called SHINE Victory Garden for Educational Success", which they created along with senior volunteers, LCCC media students and Channel 13 news anchors. The video, a multi-disciplinary academic service learning project, highlights the importance of early childhood and after-school programs.Businesses, community organizations and school districts will be recognized for their sponsorship and support of the after-school program.Guest speakers at the event will be Panther Valley Superintendent, Rosemary Porembo, Mary Edith Rhoades, Speaker of the House Keith McCall, Senator David Argall, and LCCC President Donald Snyder.Following the program, light snacks and beverages will be served.
