First Communion

Two young ladies of St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue, received the sacrament of Holy Communion on Sunday during the morning worship service. The two were Akaya K. Lacey and Cara L. Williams. The sacrament was given by the Rev. Peter Muhr.Nativity meetingThe eighth annual Live Nativity will be held on Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5, from 7-9 p.m. at the Sam Miller Field, North Ave. The next meeting of the live nativity committee is Thurs. Oct. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ebenezer E.C. Church, Center Ave. The committee is in need of new luminaries for the event and is asking that community residents save or bring all clear, clean, plastic jug containers to the church. There is a need for volunteers to help behind the scenes with the sets, costumes, canteen and cookie bakers. If you have any questions, please contact Jean Dunbar.Warm the ChildrenSt. John's Lutheran Church, South Ave., will be conducting a children's winter coat collection and give-away. They will begin collecting clean, gently used or new, infants through teen (all sizes) winter coats on the following dates; Saturdays, Oct. 24, Oct. 31, Nov. 7 and Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you wish to donate and cannot make those dates for drop off, you may call Bonnie Hoffman, (610) 554-3528, and arrangements will be made to pick up the items. The give-away dates are Saturdays, Nov. 21 and Nov. 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.At the conclusion of the give-away dates, any remaining winter wear will be distributed to the various food pantries to aide families in need.Community supperThe free community supper at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Race St., will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 4-6 p.m. This month's menu will be barbecue chicken.ParadeThe 25th annual Jim Thorpe Halloween parade will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 4:30 p.m. The parade will form at 3:30 p.m. at South St., in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th street, blocks. It will travel from 2nd and Center Streets, to 5th, then to North Street, disbanding at Memorial Park. At the park, prizes and plaques will be announced and awarded. The judging will take place at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The committee is asking that all cars be removed along the parade route by 3:30 p.m. so that the floats will have no problems getting through the streets.
