Two cases of the H1N1 flu have been reported in the Tamaqua Area School District.
Superintendent Carol Makuta confirmed the cases of the illness, also commonly known as the swine flu, following the district's board of education committee meetings this week. She said that two students, one in elementary school and one in the high school, have contracted the flu.In both cases, it was the families of the sick students who notified school district officials that their children have the H1N1 flu, she explained. The district has attempted to be proactive regarding the prevention of flu virus, disinfecting desks by wiping them down and other similar steps where possible, she noted.Tamaqua Area is also providing regular seasonal flu vaccine for students whose families are interested. Makuta said the district has also applied to be a center for the H1N1 flu vaccine as well but has not heard back yet from the State regarding its request.
