A festive 4th for Lehighton

Lehighton Borough Manager John Wagner envisions a "good, old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration" in the borough.

"To the best of my research and after many conversations with a number of residents and officials, I believe it's safe to say that the Borough of Lehighton has never before hosted a 4th of July celebration," he said. "That will change in 2010."The two-day event, featuring a carnival, music, classic car show, swimming pool events, marching band, and fireworks is planned for July 3 and 4.Wagner said all the proceeds of this event will go to the Lehighton Downtown Initiative Committee for their use in implementing a downtown revitalization plan. The borough manager first proposed the festival at the July meeting of Lehighton Borough Council. The council gave him the okay to proceed with the planning.Wagner has found a sponsor for the festival and already has lined up several events.Serving as co-chairmen will be Wagner and Dr. Barbara Belon.More information will be available in the near future.Wagner told the borough council the borough is also planning a "First Night Celebration" on Dec. 31, 2010. Chairing that committee will be Matthew Arner, who is a member of the police department, and Georgia Traupman. The borough council also approved the holding of Bike Night in the area of the borough park on Aug. 14, 2010.Bike Night raises funds for the Lehighton Fire Department and Lehighton Police Department. The 2009 Bike Night raised $5,000 each for the police and fire departments in addition to $1,000 that was donated to the borough for maintaining borough parks.
