Hanging in there halfway through the season
Just last week I had a chance to talk about making my big move after a pretty successful Week 4 in the Grid Picks race.
This week, needless to say, a 10-5 record last week isn't that bad, but Shawn McFarland's 12-3 week helped him widen his lead and was even better. Then there was Mike Haines, who by the way is a Dallas Cowboys fan like McFarland, who also finished 12-3 and hopped back up in a second place tie with Andy Steinmetz.McFarland and Haines, along with other Dallas fan Rod Heckman, are lucky they didn't have to pick the Dallas-Denver winner last weekend. As far as my picks are concerned, I was the only one to pick Shenandoah Valley over Jim Thorpe, but was also the only one not to pick Palisades over Palmerton.I should really kick myself for not sticking with the old alma mater (Panther Valley), but Frank Damian and the boys taught me a lesson. So lets take a look at what's on the agenda for Week No. 6:PANTHER VALLEY AT MARIAN - Not too long ago, the Colts owned the Panthers on the gridiron. Even though this game is up in Colt Country, the Panthers are heading in the right direction, while injuries and inexperience have the Colts finding trouble to get some wins ... Panther Valley 35-7.MINERSVILLE AT JIM THORPE - The Battlin' Miners could be just what the doctor ordered for the Olympians. Mahanoy Area almost beat Minersville last week, so this week the County Seaters get my vote ... Jim Thorpe, 32-14.NORTH SCHUYLKILL AT TAMAQUA - The Game of the Week in the TN area for sure. Sam Bonner has done a monumental job with the Blue Raiders program and I'd like to see nothing better than a win for them here. The Spartans are just a bit better, however ... North Schuylkill, 28-21.PALMERTON AT NORTHWESTERN - Until the Blue Bombers can get some offense untracked, they'll be hard pressed for a win. It's a big game for both, but the home team prevails ... Northwestern, 21-12.NORTHERN LEHIGH AT PEN ARGYL - Shades of Bulldog teams past are quickly emerging on the Northern Lehigh grid front. Pen Argyl isn't a nice place to visit, but the 'Dawgs don't care ... Northern Lehigh, 27-7.LEHIGHTON AT EAST STROUDSBURG SOUTH - There's no doubt the Cavaliers are the cream of the crop in the Mountain Valley Conference ... ES South, 32-14.PLEASANT VALLEY AT POCONO MOUNTAIN WEST - The Panthers don't have a win yet this year so this is a game that the Bears can steal ... Pleasant Valley, 14-13.POCONO MOUNTAIN EAST AT EAST STROUDSBURG NORTH - The Cardinals look good one week and bad the next. This is the bad week ... ES North, 21-0.CATASAUQUA AT BANGOR - Roughies were knocked off the pedestal by Saucon Valley last week and have come back down to reality. It doesn't matter. They get back in the win column ... Catasauqua, 28-14.SAUCON VALLEY AT SALISBURY - This is a "flip of the coin" game here if I ever saw one. Panthers lost to Palmerton, who is the only team the Falcons beat. Go figure ... Saucon Valley, 17-16.WILSON AT PALISADES - The Warriors just keep knocking over opponents as they keep smelling that chocolate in Hershey ... Wilson, 37-7.SHENANDOAH VALLEY AT SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The Hurricanes need a win badly after losing the last two weeks to North Schuylkill and Panther Valley. They'll get one here ... Schuylkill Haven, 27-14.BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC AT LIBERTY - The Hurricanes seem to have some healthy bodies back and have turned things around ... Liberty, 28-7.FREEDOM AT NORTHAMPTON - Patriots proved to me that they're a solid 4-1 team after beating up on Parkland last week ... Freedom, 21-7.NAZARETH AT EASTON - The Red Rovers are a team that I haven't been able to figure out yet ... Easton, 14-7.
