The Palmerton Area School District has announced students will not attend school on Monday, Oct. 12, due to a teacher in-service day.Community mealA free community supper will be held from 5-6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 891 Columbia Ave., Palmerton.Historical SocietyThe Palmerton Area Historical Society will hold a meeting at 7 p.m., Oct. 12. The meeting will feature a presentation by Kermit Geary, a founding member of the society, following a short business session. His subject will be Lehigh Gap Through the Ages. The public is invited, without cost or obligation.Heritage CenterThe Heritage Center, 410 Delaware Ave., will be open 1-3 p.m. on Sundays in October; in addition to the regular Wednesday-Saturday hours. The center continues to feature local sports in its Feature Room. Phone (610) 824-6954 for a recording listing the hours each day. Admission is free.Crop WalkThe Crop Walk is scheduled for Oct. 11. It will start at St. John's Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. Registration begins at 1 p.m. The walk will go down Third Street, past the Memorial Park onto Columbia Avenue, continuing to St. John's UCC, then right onto Lafayette Avenue, west to Palmerton Hospital to First Street, then onto Franklin Avenue, through the park and east to Eighth Street, turning right onto Delaware Avenue, and west to First UCC. The distance is 5.3 miles. Light refreshments will be served at First UCC.Single ParentsSingle Parents Weekend with the kids will be held from 4-6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 365 Lafayette Ave. For information, call (610) 826-2611.Food pantryFriday, Oct. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Carbon County Emergency Food Pantry, serving eligible individuals and families from Palmerton, Towamensing Township, Lower Towamensing Township, and Bowmanstown, will be open at the Community Service Building, 217 Franklin Ave., Palmerton.Halloween ParadePalmerton's annual Halloween Parade will be held on Sunday, Oct. 18, beginning at 4 p.m.Trick or TreatTrick or Treat night will be held in the Borough of Palmerton from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. Persons interested in participating are asked to have their porch lights on during those hours. Drivers should be extra cautious of children who may dart into the streets.Palmerton LibraryThe Tail Waggin' Tutors will be back for the Reading to Dogs program on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. Children will have an opportunity to practice their reading out loud skills to the dogs with the help of the trained teachers. The program is free, but parents must call the library in advance to reserve a time slot for their children.The Friends of the Palmerton Area Library will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13. New members and new ideas are welcome.
