Dedication of marker

Everyone is invited for the dedication of the recently completed community gateway and beautification enhancements. The outdoor ceremony will include the unveiling of a special marker in memory of the late Sen. James J. Rhoades, who provided the funding for the project. Family representatives, Sen. David G. Argall, and other dignitaries will be on hand for the ceremony. It will be at the corner of Main and Lehigh Streets (between the canal and Lehigh River Bridge, Walnutport) at 10 a.m., rain or shine, on Thursday, Oct. 8.Time capsuleThe Planning Committee of the 2009 Walnutport Centennial will be creating a time capsule to be placed at borough hall. The evening's program will feature Dan Stevens, president of the area's Future Focus. All interested area residents are welcome to attend. Club members are asked to bring their donations of any of the following items to be sent to area servicemen in Iraq: cash donation to purchase phone cards; Febreeze spray; or plastic travel soap dishes.The GatheringThe Gathering sponsored by Northern Lehigh Historical Society will be held at the Trout Run Covered Bride, 7th Street, Slatington on Saturday, Oct. 3. Activities include a health fair tent, free entertainment from 7:30-9:30 p.m. by the Jesse Wade Gang and Fireworks Finale. For additional information please call (610) 760-9281.Arts Fest offers free activitiesThe 5th annual Arts Fest will be on the 500 and 600 blocks of historic Main Street, Slatington, on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a rain date of Sunday, Oct. 4. There are several free activities scheduled.The free musical entertainment begins at 11 a.m. with Mike Peters and John Ortiz performing a wide variety of rock and pop. At 12:30 p.m. The Purcell's will be on stage and will also be strolling the grounds of the Art Fest with a fife and drum. Rounding out the music will be Forgotten Mountain Boys, performing folk and country music. The music stage will be located at the Mountainview High Rise, by the fireman's statue on Main Street.
