Monroe woman killed by pet bear

A Monroe county woman is dead after being attacked and mauled by a pet black bear held in captivity.

State police at Lehighton identified the victim as Kelly Ann Walz, 37, of 7297 Dogwood Lane, Saylorsburg, Ross Township.The attack occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday when it was reported Walz entered a 15-foot by15-foot steel and concrete animal enclosure to clean it.Troopers said the 350-pound bear attacked Walz and she suffered fatal injuries.Emergency personnel were dispatched but Walz was pronounced dead at the scene. Two hours later the Monroe County coroner arrived at the scene.A white van owned by a friend of the family blocked off the driveway to stop outsiders from gaining access to the scene. A white sign at the bottom of the driveway stated the area was "Private Property, No Trespassing, Enter Only If Specifically Invited."Reportedly, the bear was destroyed.A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Game Commission said the woman kept the bear in captivity for nine years. She reportedly also had an African Lion and a Bengal Tiger.
