The 11th annual Bike Night, a one-day event held on Aug. 8, netted $11,000 this year.

Of that amount, $5,000 was given to the Lehighton Fire Department, $1,000 was given to Lehighton Borough for park maintenance, and $5,000 worth of equipment will be purchased for the police department.The sum was announced during a meeting of Lehighton Borough Council by Louise Stofik, who co-chairs the Lehighton Bike Nite Committee with her husband Bud Stofik. Two other members of the Bike Night Committee also attended the meeting.Stofik said the amount of money raised this year was a little less than what was raised in past years, apparently because of the nation's economy.Bike Night is staged in the Lower Lehighton Park. Although called Bike Night, most of the events are staged during the day.The Borough Council agreed to allow Bike Night to be held on the second Saturday of August in 2010.Stofik expressed concern that a major renovation project will be occurring in the park at the time.Borough Manager John C. Wagner said the project won't interfere with Bike Night.In other matters:• The borough council tabled action on designating the Lehighton Ambulance Associate as "primary provider of BLS and ALS services within the borough." The council said it will reconsider the matter next month.• The council was informed that it's borough engineer, Bruce Steigerwalt, plans to "semi-retire in 2010." As a result, he submitted his resignation as the official borough engineer effective Dec. 31, 2009. He has been the borough engineer for over 30 years.Wagner praised the work of Steigerwalt and said because of the services Steigerwalt donates to the borough, it's virtually assured that engineering costs will rise for the borough.The council also agreed to seek an alternate engineer.• Rental rates for utiizing the borough's annex or the Community Center will be increased from $70 to $100.• Wagner said he is working on a five-year budget outline for the borough, which will give the borough a spending outline through the year 2015. He said the outline won't replace the annual budget of the borough, but will aid in better planning.• Alton Steigerwalt was named to fill a vacancy on the borough's Sewer Authority.
