DUI cases continue to dominate court in Schuylkill County

Despite the heavy penalties the arrests for drunken driving is not decreasing despite stiff fines imposed.

Of 44 persons who were qualified by District Attorney James P. Goodman for the Accelerated Rehabilative Disposition (ARD) probation program recently in Schuylkill County court, 33 were charged with driving under the influence (DUI).President Judge William E. Baldwin accepted them into the program and if they successfully complete the sentence imposed they can clear their records. All were placed in the program for a year, except were noted:James Joseph Gatens, 57, of 320 Arlington St., Tamaqua, DUI, pay $100 to Substance Abuse Education fund (SAE), $50 to Criminal Justice Enhancement Account (CJEA) fund, perform 10 hours of community service and driver's license is suspended 30 days. On a charge of limitations on driving on left side of roadway was fined $25 plus $50 costs. Gatens was cited by Patrolman Thomas Duarte, Tamaqua police.Samantha D. Drum, 34. of 139 W.
