Managing Diabetes health program

Diakon Community Services will offer a six-week program designed to help people over 50 manage the symptoms of diabetes. Caregivers, spouses and family members are also welcome.

Led by two certified trainers, the educational series will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays from July 19 through Aug. 23 at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St., Tamaqua.There is no cost and use of course materials is included, but people are asked to preregister by July 14 by calling 570-624-3017. Participants are encouraged to attend all classes.The program reviews techniques to assist in managing symptoms of Type II diabetes and pre-diabetes including fatigue, pain, hyper- and hypoglycemia and stress related to the disease. Other topics include appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance, healthy eating, appropriate use of medications and working effectively with health care providers.
