Sudden scores lift Lehighton
In a 40 minute battle between two good, neighborhood rival boys' soccer teams, it took a span of 33 seconds after intermission to determine the outcome, that eventually resulted in a 3-0 Lehighton win over Jim Thorpe.
Indians' senior forward, Joe Marks, who set the all time school record with his 42nd goal last Saturday, broke a scoreless tie when his shot caromed off the JT goalkeeper's hands and into the net with 18:47 to go.Thirty three seconds later, midfielder Frank Bokan took a pass from Dan Baka and ripped a shot into the top right corner to double Lehighton's lead. With no pun intended, Jim Thorpe coach Tony Dixon lamented the short period of time in which the Tribe tallied twice,"That was the kicker," he said. "We put our heads down after the first goal and weren't ready to defend the second one."Zach Christoff scored the Tribe's last goal with a header off a corner kick by Bokan."We came out strong and dominated play, but just didn't finish our opportunities in the first half," said Lehighton coach, Dave Yob. "At halftime I told our team that we needed to score first to put the pressure on them."After Lehighton (6-2, 4-1) controlled field advantage and circled Thorpe's goal for the first 20 minutes of the game, Jim Thorpe's Jorge Macereno got off his team's first shot but it missed the target. After Marks failed to convert in close with 13 minutes left in the half, Olympian Todd Stelling's attempt from an extreme left angle just missed the corner of the goal. After another missed shot by Thorpe's Luke Morris, Macereno hit the crossbar with 25 seconds remaining. In the second half, Jim Thorpe (4-2-1, 2-2) not only had the potent Tribe offense to handle, but they faced a brutal sun glare that had each Olympian holding a hand up to shade his eyes."The low sun was definitely a factor and unfortunately it was our disadvantage, " said Dixon."It was our luck of the draw," said Yob. "We usually choose to get a wind advantage in the second half, but today the sun was in our favor."At the 31 minute mark of the second half, Lehighton goalkeeper, Tyler Dietz made a great save on a shot by Morris that would have given Thorpe the lead. One minute later Olympian goalkeeper, Carter Rodriguez stopped an on-rushing Marks three times in a scramble in front of the net. With 20 minutes to go, Marks just missed a wide open net on a pass from Baka."A lot of teams misjudge Joe Marks' speed," said Yob. "He has very quick bursts and can surprise defenders and get by them."After the Tribes' two quick goals, Thorpe managed only one shot for the rest of the game."I was okay with our performance," said Dixon. "After we took a lot of early pressure, we had some really good chances. We were more aggressive and were able to create some open spaces.""This was a good game between two good teams," said Yob. "I told our team that Jim Thorpe was much improved and we needed to play our A game.'Thorpe's Rodriguez finished with 11 saves while his counterpart, Dietz stopped six shotsSOCCER SEE-SAW ...
